I’ve been sketching just about everyday for the Sketchbook Challenge. The latest sketches are of some orchids I got over at the farmers market for $8. They’re such a joy to look at, so I thought I should try drawing them. The flowers have intricate detail and great subtlety, so how do you draw them? Here’s what I came up with. First determine the general shape and orientation of the parts with relationship to each other. Then simplify the shapes to give the impression of detail without actually trying to draw in every last thing. After all, it is a drawing, not a photograph.
I’m putting all the drawings on my flicker page. To see them click here.
Enjoyed this post and your drawings. That concept of simplifying, yet implying detail-you’ve captured that and I want to figure out how to do that too!
It’s so interesting what pops up when someone ‘likes’ a posting on yoru blog. Thanks for stopping by! This sketch caught my eye. They are really terrific Priscilla! Pencil? These make we want to get out my sketch pad again.
