Twig Salad

I started this quilt as part of a challenge by The Modern Quilt Guild to create a monochromatic quilt.  I played with various options and decided to also add one further challenge for myself: to see if the quilt could meet requirements for the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) Sense of Adventure traveling exhibit that will start in Houston, go to Cincinnati, and finally to Long Beach.  Theme for Sense of Adventure was to “expand your personal comfort zone. Beyond the five senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch is the sense of adventure. Webster’s defines ‘adventure’ as: 1 a : an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks b : the encountering of risks (the spirit of adventure) 2 : an exciting or remarkable experience (an adventure in exotic dining) Use techniques you’ve never used before. Plumb deep within yourself for a personal sense of adventure.”

The undertaking fit the bill for adventure and being outside the comfort zone.  I played with various techniques and decided to use curved freeform piecing a la Keiko Goke and Carol Larson.  I’ve used these techniques before, but on a smaller scale.  As I played with the blocks and kept making more, there seemed to be two rules I needed to follow: use curved lines only and a monochromatic olive green palette.  Finished quilt  is 44.5″ X 44.5″
