I tuned in to the C&T Wednesday Night Live program few weeks ago where Hilary Frye gave a live demo of how to monoprint fabric using a Gelli Arts – Gel Printing Plate click here for a link to the replay. The process is quite simple and just uses the printing plate, a brayer, textile or acrylic paints and assorted objects to create texture.
I read about gel monoprinting in Rayna Gillman’s Create Your Own Hand-printed Cloth awhile back, but hesitated because the process involved making your own gelatin for the printing plate. Her instructions make it look intriguing, but I didn’t get a chance to try it. With this new re-usable printing plate, it looked really easy and fun. I ordered the plate right away.
Here’s a photo of my first batch of monoprinted fabric. I kept it simple and just used some fabric paint that I had on hand. I have lots of ideas from Rayna’s book, so I’ll be playing with this again soon.
